How to Measure Your Stairs for Mattress Delivery

2 min read

Ordering a new mattress is exciting, but before delivery it's worth checking that it can safely fit up your stairs. At Pear Mill Beds & Furniture in Stockport, we deliver hundreds of mattresses every year, and the most common access issue is the bulkhead – the lowest part of the ceiling above the staircase.

This simple guide will help you measure your stairs correctly and avoid any surprises on delivery day.

The Most Important Measurement

The key measurement is the diagonal clearance from:

  • the lowest part of the ceiling (the bulkhead),

  • to the opposite diagonal corner of where the mattress will be positioned as it travels up the stairs.

This is the narrowest point the mattress must pass through.

What You'll Need

  • Tape measure

  • Pen and paper

  • Someone to help hold the tape measure (recommended)

Step 1: Find the Bulkhead

Stand at the bottom of your staircase and look up.

The bulkhead is the section where the ceiling drops lower above the stairs, usually near the landing.

This is the point that most often limits whether a mattress will fit.

Step 2: Position the Mattress in Your Mind

Imagine the mattress being carried diagonally, with:

  • one corner near the bulkhead,

  • the opposite corner lower down the staircase.

This is the angle our delivery team will usually use when safely manoeuvring a mattress upstairs.

Step 3: Measure the Diagonal Clearance

Using your tape measure:

  1. Place one end at the lowest point of the bulkhead.

  2. Stretch the tape in a straight diagonal line.

  3. Measure to the opposite lower corner where the mattress would be positioned.

Keep the tape as straight as possible for an accurate measurement.

Step 4: Measure the Stair Width

Also measure:

  • the width of the staircase

  • the width of any landings

  • any tight turns or doorways nearby

These measurements can also affect access.

Our Top Tip

If your measurement is very close to your mattress size, allow a little extra clearance where possible. Wall lights, handrails, radiators and decorative features can reduce the available space.

Our delivery team will always aim to protect both your new mattress and your property during delivery.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my mattress will fit up my stairs?

Measure from the lowest part of the bulkhead to the opposite diagonal corner where the mattress will sit when angled. This is the most important clearance measurement.

Can all mattresses bend around stairs?

No. Some mattresses have limited flexibility, and certain premium models should not be bent beyond the manufacturer's recommendations.
